The progress bar for the extraction moved with agonizing slowness. As the percentage ticked upward, his apartment seemed to grow unnaturally quiet. The hum of his cooling fans surged into a high-pitched whine. At 99%, the screen flickered. The monitor didn't show a program. Instead, the screen went pitch black, leaving Elias looking at his own reflection in the glass. But his reflection wasn't moving. In the dark mirror of the monitor, the "other" Elias was leaning forward, eyes wide, staring back with a hunger that didn't belong to him.
