The story begins in an isolated mountain village. A centuries-old, scarred witch known as (the "Wolf-Eatress") attempts to take a newborn baby girl. The desperate mother begs Maria to spare the child until she is 16, promising to give her up then. Maria agrees but cuts the baby's tongue, rendering her mute, and marks her as her own.
Left alone, the curious Nevena accidentally kills a peasant woman named Bosilka. She discovers that by placing the woman's skin over her own, she can assume her form. Nevena spends the rest of the film cycling through different bodies—including a peasant woman, a young man, and a little girl—to understand human emotions, love, connection, and suffering.
