Set in "New Rome" (a futuristic version of New York City), the film follows visionary architect Cesar Catilina ( Adam Driver ) as he clashes with corrupt Mayor Franklyn Cicero ( Giancarlo Esposito ). Cesar wants to build a sustainable, utopian city using a miraculous new material, while Cicero fights to maintain the status quo.
Directed by cinematic legend Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis is a self-funded, $120 million "passion project" that was 40 years in the making.
Critics and audiences have described it as a "big, beautiful, sloppy mess". While praised for its visuals and ambitious themes—including parallels to the fall of the Roman Republic—it flopped at the box office, grossing only about $14 million.
Coppola has famously resisted moving the film to streaming, preferring that it be seen in theaters to preserve the "controlled viewing experience".
