The Ku Klux Klan has existed for over 150 years as a white supremacist hate group, with its history marked by three distinct, violent eras. Originating after the Civil War to oppose Reconstruction, the organization later expanded nationally in the 1910s and resurged during the Civil Rights Movement. The group currently exists in a fractured state with significantly reduced influence.
