The D.520 was powered by a 910 hp Hispano-Suiza 12Y engine and armed with a 20mm Hispano-Suiza HS.404 cannon firing through the propeller hub, along with four 7.5mm machine guns in the wings. Despite its impressive capabilities, it was plagued by production delays; by the time of the German invasion in May 1940, only a few squadrons were fully equipped.
