The episode begins in Miami when 16-year-old returns from a party to find her parents brutally murdered. After Horatio Caine (David Caruso) promises the traumatized girl he will catch the killer, evidence leads the team to a man named Nick Murdoch , who reportedly flew in from New York City.

Horatio flies to NYC, only to discover from Detective Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) that the real Nick Murdoch—an undercover officer—has been murdered and had his identity stolen by the killer.

Horatio and Mac realize the killer, later identified as ex-con Davy Penrod , was a hitman who targeted the wrong family in Miami. His intended targets were the wealthy Hanover family , who had recently returned to New York from Miami.
