The story follows Elizabeth Rambeau (played by Jean Simmons), an Englishwoman who arrives in California in 1931 to live with her winemaking family. The family is led by the patriarch Philippe Rambeau (Claude Rains), a man of high principles who refuses to sell his grapes to bootleggers.
