The story follows star race car (Owen Wilson) as he travels to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix , intended to showcase the new alternative fuel "Allinol". However, the spotlight shifts primarily to Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), who is mistaken for an American spy and recruited by British intelligence agents Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and Holley Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer).
