The story begins with the death of the wealthy Mr. Boynton. His widow, Emily Boynton (Piper Laurie), is a former prison wardress who rules her family with psychological cruelty. She blackmails the family lawyer, Jefferson Cope (David Soul), into destroying her husband's second will—a document that would have split the estate among his children and freed them from her control. Instead, the family remains entirely dependent on her.
