In a futuristic yet feudal Japan, the hierarchy of the world is determined by two headbands. The wearer of the is considered a god, untouchable by all except the wearer of the Number 2 headband . The story begins with a young Afro witnessing the brutal murder of his father, the previous Number 1, at the hands of the outlaw Justice.

The story follows Afro’s journey through seven distinct rhythmic "islands" or domains, mirroring the structure of traditional Taiko adventures. In this "Mix," Afro must synchronize his blade with the , which are said to represent the "heartbeat" and spirit of the Japanese people. Afro Taiko 7 Mix

Years later, Afro has claimed the Number 2 headband, making him the only one permitted to challenge for the ultimate title. However, he is constantly hunted by the , who seek the headbands not through honorable combat, but through wealth, technology, and overwhelming force.
